This piece was inspired by the idea that black people are only ‘thugs’ and cannot achieve anything more than stereotypes such as being a rapper or basketball star. Even the black people who are considered ‘thugs ‘ are not just thugs. That is only the facade that they project or allow others to see. I wanted to convey the other, glossed over facets of a black person; the underlying potential a lot of people either purposely ignore or don’t take the time to see.

Get It Together

It wanted to do a piece based on maintaining my composure, especially in public. The yarn is like an analogy for life; it was hard to tie and even now keeps slipping off, but I just have to try harder and keep tying it despite the difficulty. This is 9 different canvases so that the cracks show through. It represents how impossible a task it is to remain impervious all the time.
